Although the optical absorption into the detector depends on the wavelength, the intrinsic response of the detector depends exclusively on the total energy in the excitation. Our experiments on the multiphoton response at different wavelengths indicate that the SSPD functions as an energy detector.

We find new phenomenological results regarding the photodetection in SSPDs and are able to test exisiting detection models with unprecedented accuracy. This combination of a simple model system and the relatively unexplored regime of multiphoton detection yields new insights into the physics of the detection mechanism in SSPDs. This detector, which functions as a model system for the meander-type SSPD, is sensitive to multiphoton excitations.
